The Justice Department is dedicated to preserving the safety and well-being of Citizens, in addition to advocating for deeper justice-related principles.
The Community Safety Guardian (CSG) program was created to strengthen safety and wellbeing in our community. This initiative is community-led and Nation-driven, meaning it is created by FNNND for the benefit of our people.
The program is grounded in our cultural values of respect, compassion, unity, and responsibility. Our goal is to create a safe, welcoming environment for everyone by focusing on prevention, support, and trust. This is a non-policing approach to community safety –emphasizing care and prevention rather than punishment. We believe in taking care of each other in a way that reflects Northern Tutchone traditions and values.
The Community Safety Guardian program is all about keeping our community safe in a supportive, culturally grounded way:
By Our Community, For Our Community: This initiative is led by FNNND. Our own community members will serve as Guardians, looking out for our people with care and dedication.
Culturally Grounded & Respectful: Guided by Northern Tutchone values, Guardians will embody respect, compassion, and unity. The program honors our traditions – Elders’ wisdom and community input shape how Guardians work, and is built off the Community Assessment work we have already done.
Supportive – Not Policing: Community Safety Guardians are helpers, not enforcers. They do not carry weapons or make arrests. Instead, they focus on preventing problems before they escalate and offering help rather than judgment. Whether it’s calming an argument, offering a safe ride home, or checking on someone in need, Guardians put support and prevention first.
Building Trust & Well-Being: The presence of Guardians will help build trust in our community. People will know they have someone to turn to in times of need. Over time, this program will strengthen community bonds, making FNNND safer and healthier for everyone.
