On-the-job Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program with Cobalt Construction

This training program will offer applicants a full season of on-the-job experience. One season shall be considered either four months or 900 hours of consistent full time equipment experience.

To be eligible for this program applicants must be:

  1. Be a person of a Yukon First Nation;
  2. Have no more than two full seasons experience operating crawler tractor or hydraulic excavator;
  3. Have no more than one full season experience operating motor grader;
  4. Have no more than five full seasons combined experience operating motor scraper; or off-highway truck;
  5. Have no more than five full seasons experience operating a vibratory drum compactor;
  6. Have required permits and licenses to operate the required machinery (if applicable), and Completion of the Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program would be an asset.

Successful applicants will receive instruction, training and monitoring on each of the following pieces of equipment or job duties, at the operating hours specified.

  1.  Motor Scraper and/or Off-Highway Truck: 300 operating hours.
  2.  Crawler Tractor: 200 operating hours.
  3.  Hydraulic Excavator: 300 operating hours.
  4.  Motor Grader: 100 operating hours.
  5.  Vibratory Drum Compactor: 200 operating hours.
  6. Surveyor’s Helper: 100 hours

After completion of the training each trainee will be capable of carrying out the tasks described below.

Motor Scraper and/or Off-Highway Truck:

  1. Perform pre-start and circle checks;
  2. Perform basic preventative maintenance;
  3. Operate the machinery within the capacity and limitations;
  4. Perform construction operations;
  5. Maintain cut-fill patterns (scraper); and
  6. Gain an adequate level of competence.

Crawler Tractor:

  1. Perform pre-start and circle checks;
  2. Perform basic preventative maintenance;
  3. Use of crawler tractor attachments;
  4. Perform job related activities such as push loading; dozing; cut pioneering; brush clearing and landscaping; and
  5. Prepare equipment for relocation.

Hydraulic Excavator:

  1. Perform pre-start and circle checks;
  2. Perform basic preventative maintenance;
  3. Use of hydraulic excavator attachments;
  4. Perform job related activities such as excavations, loading equipment, granular pit development, ditch excavations, site clean-up; and
  5. Prepare equipment for relocation.

 Motor Grader:

  1. Perform pre-start and circle checks;
  2. Perform basic preventative maintenance;
  3. Operate the grader within capabilities and limitations; and
  4. Perform construction and maintenance operations.

Vibratory Drum Compactors:

  1. Perform pre-start and circle checks;
  2. Perform basic preventative maintenance; and
  3. Maintain packing patterns in fill areas.

Surveyor’s Helper:

  1. Learn the basics of using GPS land surveying equipment;
  2. Learn how to set up and use a surveyor’s level;
  3. Learn how to read and place slope stakes and shoulder stakes; and
  4. Learn how to read a set of highway construction plan and profile drawings
